Safety starts below the surface
The right foundation for safer play.
We specify artificial grass systems around how the area will be used, with appropriate shockpad and construction methods where required, to help create safer, more durable and longer-lasting school and nursery environments.
For areas where play equipment creates a fall-height requirement, we can install an appropriate impact-absorbing system that has been tested to relevant standards. The artificial grass pile on its own does not provide fall protection.
- Artificial grass surfaceDurable, natural-looking and suited to high levels of use.
- Infill (where required)Helps support the fibres and performance.
- Shockpad (where required)Impact-absorbing layer selected for the required Critical Fall Height (CFH).

- MUGA on a 10 mm shock pad
An uneven tarmac court with poor drainage became a multi-sport pitch. We repaired the tarmac, hid a drainage channel under the grass, laid a shock pad and finished with a 4G surface that needs no rubber infill.
“Brilliant job, the kids are happy and the drainage issues are fixed. Great team, thank you.”Wyvil Primary School

Grey, uneven wetpour turned green in a day. We levelled the low spots, bonded the grass to the wetpour, which already acts as the shock pad, and helped staff move the equipment out and back.

Questions from schools and nurseries
Your questions answered
The questions head teachers, bursars and nursery managers ask us most. If yours is not here, just ask.
What does a school playground cost?
The installed rate is £60 to £80 per m² excluding VAT, and what moves it is the groundwork rather than the grass. A flat, well-drained area sits at the lower end; a site that needs excavating, levelling or new drainage at the upper end. A shock pad under fall areas adds roughly £20 per m², and tufted-in line markings are quoted per layout.
Is it safe for children?
The grass we install is manufactured under regulations that prohibit lead and other harmful substances, and we supply the certification with the job. Where children fall from height, the safety comes from a shock pad tested to a critical fall height, not from the pile of the grass.
Can you put line markings in?
Yes. Markings are cut and tufted into the surface rather than painted on, so they do not fade or need repainting. Multi-sport layouts can carry more than one set of markings in different colours.
Can you lay over tarmac, wetpour or old artificial grass?
Often, yes. At Wyvil Primary we repaired the tarmac and laid a shock pad and a 4G surface over it; at Holly Lodge Nursery the grass was bonded to the existing wetpour; at Adamsrill Primary we lifted torn old artificial grass and re-levelled the base. We check the surface before we quote.
How much maintenance does it need?
Brushing to keep the pile upright and clearing litter and leaves. On a 3G pitch the infill needs redistributing periodically. There is no mowing, watering or feeding, which is where the saving against a grounds contract comes from.
How long will it last?
Around 20 years for general play areas. A heavily used pitch wears faster, particularly in goalmouths. Qualifying grasses carry a manufacturer-backed warranty of up to 10 years.
Do you work with the school's procurement process?
Yes. With the quote we send our Enhanced DBS confirmation, evidence of cover for £2m public liability and £10m employers' liability, product certification and the warranty terms. We invoice the school or the local authority, and prices are quoted excluding VAT.
Do you need to visit the site?
Not usually. Send the school address and a photo or two of the space: we measure the area from satellite imagery and check access from the street, so most sites are priced in writing without a visit. If you would rather we came and looked, that is free.
