Under, around and in the lawn

What goes into a properly built lawn

Every installation we quote includes what that lawn needs. Supply-only prices are on request: tell us the size of the area and we will price what you need.

  • Installer screeding a granite dust laying course level inside timber edgingUnder the lawn

    Granite dust

The fine crushed-stone layer compacted on top of the sub-base. It gives the grass a smooth, firm bed, so bumps and dips do not show through. Ask for a price
  • Weed membrane laid over a prepared base in a narrow back gardenUnder the lawn

    Weed membrane

A permeable fabric laid under a standard lawn. It stops weeds growing up through the grass while still letting water drain away. We leave it out of lawns for dogs. Ask for a price
  • Joining tape with adhesive under the seam between two pieces of artificial grassAt the seams

    Joining tape

Laid under the seam where two rolls meet. The glue goes on the tape, not the ground, so the join stays flat and hard to spot. Ask for a price
  • Installer applying grass adhesive from a cartridge gun onto joining tapeAt the seams

    Grass adhesive

Bonds the rolls to the joining tape, and fixes grass to hard surfaces such as concrete, patios and roof terraces. Ask for a price
  • Steel lawn edging holding the edge of an artificial lawn beside a gravel borderAround the edges

    Lawn edging

Holds the edge of the lawn in place where there is no wall, path or sleeper to fix to, and keeps the border line crisp. Ask for a price
  • Kiln-dried sand being brushed into a newly laid artificial lawnIn the pile

    Kiln-dried sand

Silica sand brushed into the finished lawn. It weighs the grass down and helps the fibres stand upright. Ask for a price

Odour control for pet lawns

Zeolite for artificial grass

ZeoLite is a natural mineral used alongside artificial grass to help eliminate odours from pet wee. It absorbs the smelly ammonia in dog urine, and after some rainfall it resets and can absorb even more.

  • How much: we recommend about 3–6 kg per m² brushed in on top, and 3–6 kg per m² underneath.
  • Where it goes: directly under the grass and sprinkled in among the yarn.
  • What it is for: a lawn where dogs play. It works best on a free-draining base with no membrane.

Most problems start underneath the lawn

Most problems with an artificial lawn start underneath it, not on top: a sub-base that was not compacted, no membrane, or seams glued straight onto the ground. Get those layers right and the grass will sit flat and drain for years.

Accessories questions

Good to know before you buy

The questions we are asked most about the materials under and around a lawn.

How much zeolite do I need?

We recommend about 3–6 kg per square metre brushed into the pile on top, and 3–6 kg per square metre underneath the grass. Tell us the size of the lawn and we will work out how many 25kg bags that is.

Does zeolite stop artificial grass smelling?

It absorbs the ammonia in dog urine, which is what smells, and after rainfall it resets and can absorb more. It works best with a free-draining base and a rinse with the hose every few weeks.

Should I put a weed membrane under a lawn for dogs?

No. A membrane is an absorbent fabric and holds urine, so on a pet lawn we leave it out and build a free-draining base instead.

Can I buy accessories without installation?

Yes. Supply-only prices are on request. Tell us the size of the area and we will price what you need, and advise on the base if you are laying it yourself.

Are accessories included in an installation quote?

Yes. Every installation we quote includes what that lawn needs, from the sub-base and granite dust to joining tape, edging and infill. The price we give you is fixed and in writing.
